Mooseman followup

Got a couple of questions lately about Mooseman and where to stay so I thought I'd post...

The first year I went, I stayed at the "Race Camp" which was a summer camp that they had opened early for racers. It was bunk style lodging and not a very good experience! 10 people to a room and uncomfortable cots made for a pretty poor nights sleep.

Ever since then, I've borrowed my parents camper and stayed at the Newfound RV Park. This has worked great, it's been fun to hang out with a group of friends who are racing and we ususally have plenty of space. It's a bit early in the year for most campers, but there is typically 4 or 5 other groups of racers there and a very relaxed atmosphere. I highly recommend it, it's clean and right on the bike course not far from the park where the race is held.

Meltdown

It was really hot!

Not a great race as a result of the heat and my legs being tired from Saturday's race. I did finish though and was one of only 20 or so that completed both events over the weekend.

Under a 100 days...

My uncle pointed out that we have less than a 100 days to go until Mooseman, I guess I'd better get serious.

I've just this week made some serious changes to my diet, it's time to refocus and take the next step down. I've plateaued over the last year around 220, and I need to make a significant effort to change this. I'm doing a sort of South Beach diet approach where I cut almost all carbs for a couple of weeks to try and break my sugar addiction. This approach worked to get me started almost 4 years ago when I dropped from 260 plus to where I am now.

I also need to start riding more regularly and running consistently now. Over the winter I've done what I could to stay active and enjoy myself. The swimming and mountain biking have kept me going and I've enjoyed it. I don't want to get too serious, but with an Olympic and 1/2 Iron distance triathlon back to back I need to be in significantly better shape. It's time to get back to consistent morning workouts at the gym in addition to riding and volleyball.

What are YOU waiting for?

I'm in, why aren't you yet?

Yes, Eric, Nate, Greg, Matt, Sean, Tom... I'm talking to you! Sign up here

I'm not suggesting you have to be as dumb as I am and sign up for the Bull Moose challenge, which is both races back to back, but pick one at least! Mooseman is a great event, a fun weekend all around and extremely well run. If you need to pick one race to do this year I would definitely recommend it!

Swimming fool

Lots of swimming this week!

Started with the Cyclonauts swimming in Crystal Lake on Wed. and Fri, and swam in Suffield on Tues. Total of 9,000 yards for the week, that's a ton of swimming for me! The only negative is that after my swim this morning we went for a run, and I must have pushed a bit hard on the swim to keep up and I felt like barfing during the run.

I'll have to remember to go a little easy during the race next weekend so that I don't go into my anaerobic zone before I get on the bike. It's tough to come back out of that quickly and it can really hurt your day since it's impossible to maintain good effort once you are over the threshold.

1 week and 2 days to Mooseman, I'll be training hard this weekend, then it's taper time for much of next week.
