Canoe Wrap-up

Whitewater canoe racing season is over... and the results were pretty good.  A fourth place, third place and two first places!

I raced the Scantic with my uncle Eric and although I think we were running well, we ended up going over three times and that pushed us off the podium.  It was a bit frustrating since if felt as if we made stupid mistakes that cost us.  Scantic Results: http://www.necanoe.org/Results-2010/Results2010-00.pdf

For the Hockanum, I raced with Greg and while we had no major mishaps, we fell behind Eric and Nate and ended up taking 3rd place.  The Hock tends to get decided by maneuverability and strong paddling and although we had a strong finish it was clearly not enough to catch the 2 boats ahead of us.  Hockanum results: http://www.necanoe.org/Results-2010/Results2010-03.htm

The last race was this past weekend, the New England Whitewater Championships and Eric and I were reunited for the 2 events, the 1 mile sprint and the full 5 mile downriver race.  The course is more challenging then the other races we've done, but we had a perfect fun for the 1 mile sprint and came close to catching our main competition that started 1 minute ahead of us.  The longer 5 mile race started and we again got through most of the first section well, with one mishap were I ended up falling out of the boat.  We recovered quickly and then ran an almost flawless race, really hitting the rapids well including the tough Class III section.  The final result was first place, beating the next boat by almost 2 minutes.  We did get a mention in the Keene Sentinel : http://sentinelsource.com/articles/2010/05/03/sports/local/free/id_399476.txt

Hock coming Up!

The Hockanum River Race is coming this Sunday and I'm hoping for a slightly better showing than at the Scantic. I'll have a different race partner, as Eric will be racing with his son, but hopefully the results will be better anyway.

We paddled the first 2/3rds of the course last night which includes most of the tricky parts, the rapids and the twisty areas. There really isn't much from a rapids perspective, one section behind the old Economy Electric area (which is a good viewing area by the way!) that isn't really all that difficult. It will mostly be about avoiding other boats and not getting hung up on the ledges. There are not significant drops, but going over the ledges occasionally grabs the canoe and slows you up a lot especially if you need to jump out of the boat and pull it past the rocks. The rest of the race will be about navigating the tight turns and then just paddling straight and fast.

Looking forward to it and hoping we get some more spectators!

Scantic Race Carnage

It wasn't pretty, went in 3 times after 3 mistakes through the race and ended up in 4th place. You can see the race pictures here: http://www.lgpics.com/scanticrace/032710index.html

My personal carnage starts at picture 165....

Long Overdue

Lots has happened...

Less than thrilled with my Hockanum river race results, we were 5th.

Went 1-2 at Volleyball, not particularly good considering we weren't playing a very good team

Got a brace for my elbow, but it didn't completely help for Racquetball... I did get a new racquet though!

Leaving for Florida on Thursday! Hoping to get to a Crossfit affiliate near Naples.

Scantic Race in 3 Days!

I'll be doing the Scantic Spring Splash again this year, a 5 mile whitewater canoe race. Unfortunately, my brother won't be able to race with me this year, but I've found a good substitute in Greg, another veteran of the race. Looking forward to the run, it may be a little easier this year as the water is pretty low, but hopefully we can still finish in the money! It's a fun race to watch, the finish line is easily accessible and has rapids right there, check the post below from last year for details.

From last year, prep and where to watch

Crossfit Perservere

I did my second workout at Crossfit Perservere, and my 6th crossfit workout overall this morning, and it was just as tough as the first!

Went through the standard crossfit warm-up, then hit a main W.O.D of 5 rounds of 100 skips over a jump rope, 20 - 20kg kettleball swings, then 10 knees to elbows.  The toughest part was the jump roping, not a skill I'm particularly good at, and I quickly went anaerobic.  I became pretty fatigued, pretty fast, especially since I was starting with pretty sore arms after paddling down the Hockanum for a few hours yesterday...

Still, another good experience, and still wanting more!

Pics from the Hock

As promised... a couple of pictures from the Hockanum race this weekend. My buddy Satish took the the first couple, which were prior to the race start. This first picture is my brother and I with my uncle attempting to butt in from the back. I would try to make a witty comment, but he and his son did beat us to finish first in our class, a couple of minutes ahead of us. Eric and his friend Greg who you can also see to the left in the green shirt(he was in a kayak by himself this year) have raced the Hock for well over 10 years, and havebeen placing just about every year as well. Matt and I definitely wanted to beat them, but we'll take a third place finish!
This picture is of Jack and I, another co-worker who was attempting to purge a dismal 2004 race result (see Cassada, Jack) from his record! The good news is that he did have a better race... results pending!
The final set of shots is our attempt at navigating the right side of the rapids. It may be a bit faster, but it's also riskier, and we paid the price here as we got a little antsy when pushing off a rock and went over as we were climbing back in the boat. Not a particularly pretty sequence...

Rocked in Third

Not as good a race as we would have liked, we struggled a bit and took a swim a couple of times but ultimately finished in third for a nice t-shirt!

We took the line to the right through the rapids and made it most of the way before getting hung up. Then after I pushed us off and we tried to jump back in we got unbalanced and went over again. My aunt has the whole sequence in gruesome frame by frame glory on her camera, I will post the pictures when I get them.

I also jammed my thumb back pretty hard at the portage and had trouble gripping the paddle for the second half of the race but we still managed to stay pretty strong, mostly thanks to my brother. Our second mishap occured while we were passing another boat and got jammed against a log while they took the inside route.

In any case, a second and a third in two weeks of racing is nothing to sneeze at I suppose.

EDIT: Pictures from the race photographer starting here... the sequence is about 5-6 pictures long, I've seen my aunt's shots, and they are definitly better.

Watch the Hock!

The race starts behind CT Golf Land, it's pretty easy to find on RT 30 in Vernon.

The best viewing is probably going to be at the rapids behind Beacon Light, and you should be able to park in the large parking lot and follow the crowd down the trail to the river. The action will start there within 10 minutes of the race start.

Race finish is behind the McDonalds in East Hartford...

Rock the Hock

Sunday starting at 11:30, I hope to be racing the Hockanum river starting in Vernon. High stakes, my uncle and cousin are racing in my division this year since he's finally out of the junior class having turned 16. It's raining today (Good), and it's supposed to be sunny on race day (Also Good). Let's hope for lots of water and a beautiful day!

Scantic Race Report

The results were very good, second place, and we were only beaten by 15 seconds in a very competitive race. Looking back, it's pretty easy to see where we could have easily made up the time, but it's tough to know during the race how close it will be with the staggered starts. Ultimately we had a great time, and so the race was a success!

We got there in plenty of time for registration and to watch a bit of the video slide show from last year. Spotting my brother and I coming through the rapids section without dumping the boat was pretty nice, and we hoped a good sign for the race to come. We scouted a bit of the staircase rapids, the final set of drops right by the finish line, and noticed immediately that the water was quite a bit lower than last year. It was clear that the line we took successfully last year was still available, a quiet holding eddy right between the two drops. Once again, we planned to get over the first drop and into that area then carefully come across the ledge and line up the second drop. We would have time to make sure we hit the chute square and run right through it.

Heading up to the start, we dropped off the boats and shuttled the vehicles back with my brother-in-law Sean who had come to watch and was going to keep my daughter so that she could watch the race as well. It was pretty cold and windy still, I was wearing a wetsuit with one shirt under and one thicker shirt over it. The waiting is the coldest part since you don't want to overdress and then be hot during the race and you need to leave all your warm clothes at the other end of the river. Finally the novice racers had all started and they were ready to start the full course paddlers.

Our class was pretty big (it turned out to be 14 boats) and we started 5th I believe. We jumped in the boat and hung out waiting for the go signal. After the start, we almost immediately passed 1 boat, and then 2 or 3 more. It's a relatively straight shot to the portage, 2 miles or so worth of turns but no significant drops so while you need to stay sharp there isn't a whole lot of risk. The portage comes up right where the novice class gets out, and the tough stretch begins.
We jumped out all alone and headed up the step climb to the water stop, grabbed an orange slice and headed down the steeper slope back to the river. Basically, you hang on to the rope and let the canoe slide down. We came up to another boat at the bottom, but passed them getting into the water and pushing off faster.

Almost immediately, you come to Stockers Rapids, a steep chute with an optional portage. We elected to run it of course, it's no fun to go around, and headed towards the left. Unfortunately, we had not scouted it prior, and with the water level a bit low we had virtually nowhere to go when we got to the drop. There's a huge chute that we were going to go over, probably a 4 foot drop or so and no way to avoid it. We did manage to stay upright, but got enough water in the boat that shortly thereafter we rolled when hitting another rock. We pushed it quickly to the side and jumped back in. I think we actually lost more time 1 minute later when we got hung up on a rock and had to jump out of the canoe to push off. We also took the time to empty all the water at that point as well.Moving on from there, we made good time and didn't see any other boats. We navigated the rest of the river pretty much without issue, going through the chimney pretty smoothly and only pausing a bit to bail out a little water. We approached the finish rapids and saw our first boat in a while, they were having a bit of difficulty but we went through just as we planned. I saw my daughter and brother-in-law on the side and heard them yelling as we dropped through the chute to the bridge. This was also the point where another boat passed us, a couple who win the Male/Female division every year. They went by us pretty quick, but we pulled to the finish and jumped out happy with our race.
As I mentioned, we ended up in second place, getting nipped by just a few seconds. We hung around and watched the race video and ultimately got a little wooden canoe plaque. You can page through the Pictures here if you like, there's no good ones of us other than waiting at the start line but you can get a feel for some of the rapids.

Canoe "dry" run

Matt and I took a run down the Hockanum river this past Saturday to get our rhythm set in the canoe and scout a bit for the upcoming races. We'll race the Scantic Splash this Saturday and then the Hockanum River Race a week later.

We ran a few rapids similar to the one on the left... well similar but minus about 5 feet of drop! The Hock has a few drops, but mostly it's tricky corners and some sweeping currents which push you into obstacles. It also features a flat section across Union Pond where staying straight and strong paddling are the keys to a fast transit.

We worked on our communication and re-establishing our feel for the boat so we wouldn't be entering this weekend's race cold. The keys for us in the Scantic Race are going to be staying upright and picking our way through the obstacles. The Scantic is much more challenging from a whitewater perspective than the Hock, it has more and larger drops. Last year we went in the water three times and beyond being very cold (it was 32 degrees), falling slows you down quite a bit. We need to focus on slowing down and setting up each drop better and staying back in the boat to keep the bow out of the water.

If anyone is interested in watching the race, there is a really good spectator spot where the finish line is. The largest set of rapids are right before the bridge and the action there will be a lot of fun to watch. Getting there is pretty easy, and there is some on street parking available nearby. Keep in mind that the bridge over the river will be closed to cars, so whichever direction you come from you wont be able to drive to the other side although you can certainly walk. You can check out http://www.scanticspringsplash.com/ for more details, and use the map below to find your way to the finish line area. Hope to see some folks there. Oh, and if you're looking for us, there will be two guys in a green canoe, both wearing wetsuits, and I'll probably have a red shirt on.

Ruts

I haven't been feeling to well for the last couple of weeks, my workouts are starting to drag and I'm just not feeling energetic. I think the brief change in my diet was helping but then I yoyo-ed back to poor eating habits. Spring is coming, and with it a lot of hopes for feeling better, riding and running faster and looking slimmer. Unfortunately, the hopes haven't yet turned into actions, but I'm once again going to try and restart my motivation.

Other news, I ordered a rear wheel that is disc-compatible, but it will be a week or two until I get it. I'm going to try and do the front brake this weekend anyway... take it in steps. I'm also hoping to get out in the canoe in preparation for the Scantic Splash. Take a look at some pictures or here from last year... it was a blast then, hope it's even better this year.
